The LGPS is available to all councillors of county councils or county borough councils in Wales where membership of the Scheme is offered to them under the Council’s allowances scheme and who are under 75 years of age.
Those Welsh councillors who are offered membership are eligible councillors. If you have been offered membership of the Scheme, it is your decision whether you wish to join. If you choose to do so, you will become a member of the LGPS from the start of the first pay period after your decision is received.
The LGPS is a secure Scheme because the benefits are guaranteed by law. The benefits you receive when you retire are based on the number of years you have been a member of the Scheme and your average pay as a councillor. The benefits do not depend on share prices and are not affected by fluctuations in the stock market.
If you wish to become a member of the Scheme, it is important that you complete and return the joining form. Once your form is received, your record will be set up and a notice of your membership of the Scheme and other relevant documents, will be sent to you.
Following your election, check your payslip to ensure that pension contributions are being deducted.
Please note that it is very important that you complete a Death Grant Expression of Wish form after you join the LGPS so that the death grant payable if you die is paid in accordance with your wishes.
